Do you slump or slouch at your desk, while driving or using your smart phone? Humping is when you let your head fall in front of your body and you start to develop a rounding or humping of your upper back. It is quickly becoming one of the most common postures that is devastating our culture today. Just look around and you’ll see what we are talking about!
You may not realize it, but poor posture is an epidemic and creating serious health problems that go beyond simply causing an unsightly “old lady hump.” Forward head posture creates damage to your neck over time that can reduce range of motion, cause headaches and pain, and even create nerve and circulation issues to the arms and hands. In addition, humping causes internal organ distress making it hard to take full breaths of air and reduces digestive function. This type of physical stress raises stress hormones in your body, breaking you down over time and ultimately contributing to chronic disease.
Upper back humping, or what is called a hyperkyphotic posture, leads to major compressive forces to your thoracic spine making you susceptible to compression fractures. A recent study linked hyperkyphotic posture to a 1.44 greater rate of mortality in elderly people. On top of the intense physical damage humping can do, it’s also killing your confidence. It has been scientifically proven that if you purposely hold powerful postures, you can reduce your stress and change your hormones.
